Ebenezer William Dabbs, Age 18

Ebenezer was the son of Mrs Mary Bradburn (formerly Dabbs) and the late Mr C Dabbs of 6 Woodhouse Lane, Horsehay; He was the brother of Gwen Dabbs, who lived at the Post Office, Horsehay.
Ebenezer was killed in action in France on the 27th September 1918 and lies buried in the Lowrie Cemetery at Havrincourt in grave C.II.
Battles Of The Hindenburg Line - Battle Of The Canal Du Nord - 27/09/1918 Location: Flesquières. Allied victory. In early September the German Army had been forced out of all the territory gained during it's Spring Offensive and had retreated back to the Hindenburg Line.
One portion of this was on the eastern bank of the partially built Canal du Nord. Begun in 1913 to link the Oise River with the Dunkirk-Scheldt Canal, construction had been halted on the outbreak of war.
During their retreat, the Germans had destroyed all the bridges over the canal and made the area north of Sains-lès-Marquion virtually impassable, by deliberately damming and flooding it. Halting the advance to put preparations in place for assaulting the Canal du Nord, on 27th September the Allies launched their attack on the Hindenburg Line.
3rd Division in VI Corps, Third Army, south of the Canal du Nord, advanced with 8th Infantry Brigade and 9th Infantry Brigade. 9th Infantry Brigade capturing Ribécourt-la-Tour by mid-morning, 76th Infantry Brigade, 1st Gordon Highlanders and 8th King's Own (Royal Lancaster Regiment) the lead battalions, 2nd Suffolk Regiment in close support, passing through to take Flesquières.
Relieved by 62nd Division during the night, the Division returned to the line during the evening of 30th September-1st October, to carry the advance on towards Rumilly-en-Cambrésis. 76th Infantry Brigade attacking during the early morning of 1st October, 2nd Suffolk Regiment and 1st Gordon Highlanders made progress into Rumilly but were not able to fully secure the village.
